Hello again, Friends!
Erika and Rocko here; we’d like to tell you a little bit about this year’s sale.
Just like last year- on Wednesday, April 9th at 10:00AM CST, our online sale will go live on DVAuction.com. The lots will be open for bidding until 5:00PM CST on Saturday, April 12th. You can place bids on any of the lots, any time. As Grandpa John would say, “From the comfort of your underwear on your own couch!” Here’s where it gets fun. At 4:59PM, if a last minute bid is placed on any certain lot, the time on EVERY lot will extend by 5 minutes. Time runs down and the sale closes when bidding has subsided and stopped. We understand that some folks may not have access to the computer. Please call one of the listed representatives to assist you in placing a bid. We will get you taken care of!
That’s the admin side of things, but now let’s talk cows. They say photos are worth a thousand words, so we wanted to use pictures to map out a little of what we are doing around here. If you study our pedigrees for a while, or maybe even just glance, you’d probably notice the patterns in the sires that come about. Every time we ask Grandpa John why he breeds who to what, he never seems to have a solid answer why, other than he likes to bring the sires from the back of the pedigrees up to the front. Ed Oliver once told me, “Line breeding is like a round pen- no corners to back into.” That’s just what we do here, too. It’s a constant circle of bringing back reliable sires. It’s a great way to maintain consistency in our herd.
So, after looking through our cow families, you likely found at least one of these Legend Sires in every three generation pedigree. Over the years, Dad has continued to use these sires because of their predictability and sustainability throughout generations. The bulls on our sale this year have years and years of greatness to back up their future legacy.
But let’s not forget about the great cows in all of these pedigrees. After all, where would we be without great females! It’s easy to pick out a favorite in your own herd. I think that’s a common trend on lots of operations. Why is she your favorite? Her udder, her disposition, her way of weaning off a great calf year after year- the reasons are endless. How do we make a foundation herd of favorites? Well, by assuring those family trees are full of predictability, too. Selling females is not fun for Grandpa John. It’s like pulling teeth to get him to pick any out because he wants to keep them all! I am excited for you to acquire any from the line up this year. Any and all of these young females will make exceptional additions to your herd. I challenge you to really dig and study into their lineage. You might just find your next favorite!
I wanted to keep this year’s letter short and sweet, and let the pictures be my thousand words, and our videos be my million words, so on behalf of Cotton Angus, I’d like to thank you for your interest in our program. We truly appreciate you and your business! We hope that you’ll have fun with your mouse at bidding time. Please don’t hesitate to call with questions.
Although the sale is exclusively online, we invite you to the farm that Saturday afternoon. We will have a small tailgate gathering with a meal after the lots close. We love the fellowship that follows the traditional sale format. All are welcome!
